Welcome to The Lecturers’ Cookbook. This is a dynamic resource designed to help busy lecturers in search of instructional guides or ‘recipes’ to engage with specific issues in the classroom.
The recipes are activities that have worked successfully for their authors for some years. The Lecturers’ Cookbook reflects the lecturers’ experiences of what works in the classroom in an increasingly complex and challenging context for teaching and learning. It is an open resource in that users can also become contributors, and we welcome submissions, all of which are peer reviewed.
The recipes address a wide range of diverse issues relating to teaching and learning such as effective student feedback, inclusivity, employability or personal tutoring. Recipes include lesson plans, classroom activities and assessment designs.
A cross-cutting theme of the recipes is an inclusive approach to learning and teaching. Students are from hugely diverse backgrounds and have different expectations and understandings of higher education, which can lead to differences in the outcomes of their learning. The Cookbook is aimed in part to address those challenges for all our students.
The Lecturers’ Cookbook aims to bridge the gap between pedagogical theory and practice. The openness to contributors and the facility to review and revise recipes provides an opportunity to build a community of practice where colleagues can share their successful practice that otherwise remains unsung.
The Lecturers’ Cookbook has been designed by a group of staff and students from across Birmingham City University. The team was supported by the Faculty of Business Law and Social Sciences’ Interdisciplinary Research Fund (2025).
